Sites under this team typically work with youth and children in schools, churches, and drop-in centers through tutoring, and mentoring.
Westlawn
Background: Lawndale is between the loop and the west suburbs. It's divided between the African American side and the Mexican-American side. It's sometimes referred to as a “ghetto” but it's really not. The kids don't have much but aren't dirt poor. Most, if not all, of the kids are African American.
Focus: To assist Westlawn staff as they work with to meet “Club Champ” Objectives (reading, homework, math problems, Bible stories, develop good attitudes, develop imagination and develop personal relationships with the kids) - To provide extra help with the kids as leaders try to help them with their education - To develop personal relationships with the kids, staff, and each other.
Site Rating: This is a good site for people who are interested in teaching inner city kids. It provides a personal look at where kids are and why they act the way they do. It provides an opportunity to serve in a place most cannot understand-inner city, lower income.
Additional Comments: This program wants volunteers for the full year. We are currently going twice a week because of schedules and “Club Champ” actually meets three times a week.
