Cherie Meacham, Professor of Spanish

& Director of the Faculty of Cultural Studies

 

Education:  B.A. University of Illinois (History); M.A. Kent State University (Latin American Studies); Ph.D. Northwestern University (Hispanic Studies).  Dissertation:  “From Tragedy to Irony: The Figure of the Hero in Four Modern Spanish Novels”  Director:  Cyrus DeCoster

Research interests:  Has published widely on women’s literature, authors include Isabel Allende, Rigoberta Menchú, Laura Esquivel and Julia Alvarez. Has presented papers at conferences at universities throughout the United States as well as in Venezuela, Bermuda, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic.  

Awards: Has received travel grants to study in Chile, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Spain, Mexico and the Caribbean.  Was chosen by the Chicago Tribune as a member of an “All Star” team of regional university professors.  

New projects:  Researching women’s literature in the Caribbean, preparing a manuscript on mother/daughter relationships in Latin American literature, preparing a video documentation of  “La Noche de Muertos” in Michoacan, Mexico, organizing a faculty tour to Argentina and Uruguay in the hopes of establishing student exchange opportunities with universities there.    

Outreach:  Is a member of the Chicago Religious Leadership Network on Latin America and the Mexican Solidarity Network, has volunteered as a translator/interpreter for victims of human rights abuses in Central America, and is working to improve the conditions of an orphanage in Morelia, Michoacán.    

To relax enjoys: traveling, snorkeling, tennis, gardening, reading, walking beaches with her dogs, listening to Latin music in all forms.

I don't like: lima beans or uncomfortable shoes.

I really don't like: disrespect -- for animals, people, or the environment.  

What people probably don't know about me: Most of my clothes are from second-hand stores.
