Richard W. Carlson joined the faculty at North Park in 1978. His bachelor
of arts is from North Park College in 1962. He received his master of
divinity from Union Theological Seminary in 1965 and the doctor of ministry
from McCormick Theological Seminary in 1975. His dissertation was entitled
"Theology and Ministry: A Continuing Education Model for Pastors
Focusing on Ministry and Issues of Evangelism, Spirituality, Women in
the Church, and Pastoral Leadership." Carlson completed additional
studies at North Park Theological Seminary in 1965-66. He was ordained
by the Evangelical Covenant Church in 1967 and served as pastor of the
Douglas Park Covenant Church from 1966 to 1973. He has served on numerous
denominational and conference commissions and boards. In 1991, he received
the Evangelical Covenant Church's Irving C. Lambert Award in Urban and
Ethnic Ministries for his work in the areas of ministry in the city
and racial reconciliation. Carlson served the Seminary
as director of field education from 1979 to 2005. He has taught as an adjunct in the doctoral
programs of McCormick Theological Seminary and Northern Baptist Theological
Seminary. Carlson has done extensive study in congregational life, the rural church, world religions, church administration, and spirituality. He teaches the first course in the certificate program of the seminary's Center for Spiritual Direction. He enjoys sports, plays
softball, is a lifelong Dodger fan, and is seeking to become fluent
in Russian.
