Part I: Functions and Graphing

This first part of the text will discuss the function concept and general graphing principles.  Since our main object of study are the various functions that arise in real-world modeling problems, it is crucial that we establish a solid foundation of understanding of the function concept.  We will also see how this concept can be used to gain new insight into the nature and procedures of Algebra.

Since a 2-dimensional graph is one of the most powerful tools for working with and understanding functions, we will also spend a good deal of time discussing fundamental principles of graphing.  These principles will help to make mathematical formulas come "alive".  We will use these principles, whenever we introduce a new function, to quickly sketch complex formulas, and to help us to choose an appropriate mathematical model in different applied settings.
