In this Chapter, we will study the general properties of polynomial and rational functions. We will begin by comparing different power functions, such as f(x) = x5 and g(x) = x-2. We will use our knowledge of such functions to develop a new graphing strategy, based on the idea of piecing together different approximations. We will use this technique to sketch polynomial functions, such as h(x) = 2x3 - x + 5 and rational function, such as k(x) = (2x3 - x + 5)/(-x2 - x + 2). This technique will require us to factor and divide polynomials, so we will discuss these procedures. Along the way, we will learn many interesting properties of polynomials.
