Participating in an internship can be a rewarding and central part of your undergraduate experience, whether you are interested in a career in public history or not.  By spending a semester working in a museum or archive, you can see close up how public  historians and scholarly researchers, custodians of the public  memory, go about doing their work.  Possible internship sites include:

  • Chicago History Museum
  • Chicago Children’s Museum
  • Field Museum of Natural History
  • Swedish American Museum Center
  • Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum
  • Oak Park & River Forest Historical Society
  • The  Newberry Library
  • You can learn about Gallery Interpretation, Exhibit Preparation, Archives, Research, Education Programs with school groups, etc.

If you are interested, see your advisor and speak to the Director of the Center for Career Planning Services which assists students  in getting placed in internships.  Their  web address is http://www.northpark.edu/home/index.cfm?NorthPark=Res_Career.Rcar_Main .
