University Participates in Earth Hour

Lights go out in North Park's oldest building

CHICAGO, IL (March 28, 2009) – On Saturday, March 28, North Park students, faculty and staff turned out their lights for one hour in honor of a new annual tradition encouraging energy conservation.

From 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., the University joined residents from cities across the world as well as proprietors  of Chicago’s skyscrapers, landmarks, theater marquees, and shops in turning off their lights voluntarily for Earth Hour, sponsored by the Department of Sustainability. It was second consecutive year that North Park has participated in this effort to end global warming.

The lights in Old Main, North Park’s oldest structure, were turned off for the hour—including  those of its historic cupola for only the second time in nearly 25 years. The first was during last year’s Earth Hour observation.
