Health Center FAQs
1. What medical services does Health Services offer?
- Evaluation and treatment of minor illnesses
- First aid
- Lab testing: Urinalysis, pregnancy
- Blood pressure screening
- Allergy injections
- Immunizations
- Tuberculosis skin testing (PPD)
- Travel vaccines
- Referrals to other community health providers
2. Who may use Health Services?
Health Services is available to all North Park students for immunizations and health education. All other services are for:
- Full-time traditional undergraduate student (taking 6 hours or more in the current semester)
- Seminary students taking 5 hours or more in the current semester
3. Do I need to be covered under North Park's student health insurance plan?
It is not necessary to be covered under North Park's student health insurance plan to use the Health Center's services. However, insurance (either private or North Park's) is required of traditional undergraduate students. Students (especially from out-of-state) are encouraged to examine and be aware of the limits of their health insurance coverage.

4. What immunizations am I required to have as a student?
Students born after 1956 are required by the State of Illinois to submit proof of up-to-date immunizations for red measles, second red measles, mumps, rubella (or MMR) and tetanus/diphtheria booster within last ten years. Students not in compliance with the regulations will be hindered from registering for subsequent semesters. The Tetanus/diphtheria vaccination is available at the Health Service Center. 5. What if I need a physical or other lab tests not done at Health Services Center?
Students in need of physical exams for athletic, employment or other reasons may have them done at Swedish Covenant Hospital Family Practice Center (SCHFP). The charge is $25.00, payable at the time of the visit. For an appointment for a physical, call (773) 989-3806 and identify yourself as a North Park student.
All LAB FEES ARE EXTRA and payable to the North Park University Health Center. Fees are discounted for eligible NPU students and are often less than the co-pay of your insurance.
6. What if I need x-rays or tests or I need to be hospitalized?
Students requiring hospitalization can be admitted to Swedish Covenant Hospital or another area hospital. X-rays and laboratory tests can also done at Swedish Covenant Hospital.
7. Will my visit and records be kept confidential?
Visits to the Health Services or Family Practice Center and all records are confidential and cannot be reviewed or released to anyone without the consent of the student.
8. Who do I call after hours or in case of emergency?
In case of emergency: Call 911 or go directly to Swedish Covenant Hospital Emergency Department located at 5140 N. California near the intersection of Foster and California, six blocks east of campus.
9. What will I pay at Health Services?
No charge for:
- Office visit with nurse
- Urinalysis
- Pregnancy test
- Selected over-the-counter drugs, limited 2 day supply
- Crutches and other selected medical supplies can be borrowed from the Health Service Center. Students will be charged at full replacement cost if these items are not returned.
- Examination by a physcian at Swedish Covenant Hospital Family Practice Center (arranged through Health Services). There is no charge during the fall and spring semesters, and a $25.00 charge during the summer semester. Some medical procedures at Family Practice may require patient payment. Check first at Health Services for individual procedure cost. Cash, check, Visa or Mastercard are accepted AT THE TIME OF SERVICE for the following:
- PPD (tuberculosis skin test): $10
- Tetanus/Diphtheria: $30
- Laboratory Fees at Swedish Covenant Hospital are billed at Health Service's cost. This is at a reduced price ,and generally less than an insurance co-pay.
- Some travel immunizations are available. Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and Typhoid vaccines are available at Health Service's cost. Contact us at least one month prior to travel to check the cost. You are advised to plan the cost of vaccinations into your study abroad or Global Outreach budget.
10. What discounts are offered to family members of Seminary students?
Swedish Covenant Hospital Family Practice services are available to families of seminary students at a 25% discount.
