American Studies 5-Week Program: June 29-July 31, 2009

The American Studies Program is an intensive program that combines ESL classes, cultural themes, and field trips. Students will have the opportunity to sharpen their English language skills by concentrating on speaking, listening, reading, and vocabulary building.

The Program is divided into three levels (Low Intermediate, High Intermediate, and Advanced), each with three classes: Speaking-Listening, Reading-Vocabulary, and Culture. All students must take a placement test before entering the ESL courses. Students take 20 hours of class per week and participate in afternoon field trips twice a week. Class work may include communicative activities, discussions, cultural readings, listening exercises, vocabulary games, and videos.

All students participate in two field trips per week. Excursions for the Summer 2008 Program included a walking tour of the downtown Chicago, Chicago Cultural Center, Millennium Park, Art Institute, the Field Museum, Chicago Botanic Gardens, Riverwalk, McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, Foster Avenue Beach, Water Tower, Museum of Contemporary Art, and Lincoln Park Zoo.
